Background
Al haramlek was founded in 1994 as a cottage industry that created traditional yet unique designs of hand made embroidered products while helping Egyptian women achieve their individuality and teaching them how to read and write. Since then the cottage industry has evolved into a small company that has represented Egypt in Berlin at the international travel business exhibition, their designs have been modeled on the catwalk of Fashion TV and their designs have captured the eye of renowned French designer Christian Louboutin who used their embroidered butterfly motif for his 2007 summer collection.
The company is a partnership between the creative director Thoraya El Farnawani and the business director Guizine El Guindy. They produce many products including bed sheets, table cloths, towel sets, galabeyas and last but not least shawls
The phrase “Al Haramlek” is commonly understood as a place where women can be sheltered from men and the outside world, but actually the word “el haram “originally means a sacred place. The company is a mix of both as all of the workers are women and the business is a very women oriented, while being sacred to these women as they can express their individuality.
Since 2007 the company has closed for six months and has reopened in January 2008 since then they have shown to be profitable they have doubled their initial investment.
