Central To The Mission Of Ben & Jerry’s is the belief that all three parts of their mission statement must thrive equally in a manner that commands deep respect for individuals in and outside the company and supports the communities of which they are a part (Ben and Jerry’s, 2008).
Ben & Jerry’s realized the value of its employees and were very generous with employee benefit packages. The company provided tuition reimbursement, 401(k) plan, same sex partner health benefits, smoking cessation classes, screenings for blood pressure and cholesterol, and free ice cream. They recognized there is more to business than just making a profit (Thompson, 2001).
Motivational Principals and Growth, Achievement and Satisfaction
The reason for Ben & Jerry’s thriving growth is due to their unique style of corporate culture. In order to make working conditions more pleasurable employee dress was informal and casual. Communication amongst management and employees was encouraged and opinions were given serious consideration. These opinions or suggestions resulted in the creation of several Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavors.
In turn, Ben & Jerry’s exercise this belief by educating the workforce on various local and global issues. Groups of employees have actually spent time through company-sponsored trips to live and work among tribes whose lands are environmentally threatened. These experiences allowed workers the opportunity to represent their corporation by giving back to society, which is also a reflection on living the social mission (Sullivan & Heisler, 1992).
