Function Of Planning

Introduction
Planning is one of the four major functions of management that helps companies become successful. Halliburton, founded in 1919 is one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the oil industry. In 1962 they acquired Brown & Root. They were a major engineering and construction company. In 1988 they acquired M.W. Kellogg and they became known as KBR. They have nearly 50,000 employees in 70 countries throughout the world (Halliburton, 2008). They are headquartered in Houston Texas and recently established an operational headquarters in Dubai. In 2007 they split from Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR) since then they no longer are in the business of providing logistical military support.
Steven R. Covey says, “Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success, leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall”. To make sure that the ladder is leaning against the right wall leaders must have effective planning. Planning helps establish the mission, vision and goals of an organization. Planning helps establish a sturdy base for the other functions of management. Without a strong base any structure will be weak, including an organization. There are several factors that can have an influence on the planning function of management. Some of the factors that will be looked at in this paper are legal, ethical and corporate social issues.
