Praying silently in the midst of the cathedral, Catholic members practice Christianity with aspects of tradition, loyalty, and like any religious pride. Furthermore, the Catholic Church is the largest of all Christian churches with over one billion members. Its structures are also some of the most beautiful architectural designs created since the birth of Christ. By further explaining the traditions and practices of Catholicism, many can additionally understand how Catholicism differs from other forms of Christianity.
The Catholic Churches are one of the most beautiful and symbolic buildings known in our society today. The Catholic Church architecture is made up of cathedrals with pinnacles and towers that point upwards to direct the viewers to Heaven. Throughout the cathedrals are beautiful stained glass windows which take over much of the wall space. These stained glass windows depict religious stories that are in the Bible. The architecture of the Catholic buildings assigns symbolic meanings to the various parts of the Church. For example, the roof symbolizes charity which covers a multitude of different sins. The floor symbolizes the foundation of the Catholic faith. The Apostles, Bishops, and Doctors were represented by the columns within the Church. The vaulting represents the preachers who held up the dead weight of man’s infirmity heavenwards and the beams represent the champions who defend it with the sword. The nave symbolizes Noah’s Ark and the Baroque of St. Peter. The direction of the West represents death and evil and the East represents the Heavenly Jerusalem. (Saunders, 1998)
