Tesco Plc. is a supermarket in the United Kingdom. In 1998, Tesco Plc. was ranked 18 in the top 100 retailers, with total sales of US$28,436 million from 821 stores in eight countries (Table 5.1). Tesco Plc. came to Thailand in 1995 at the invitation of CP Group. At that time Thailand’s economic crisis had started. CP and Tesco Plc. opened a new company called Tesco Thailand Co. Ltd. CP Group held 51 per cent of the shares and Tesco Plc. held 49 per cent. CP then allowed Tesco Thailand Co. Ltd to hold 75 per cent shares of the Ekchai Distribution System Co. Ltd, the company that owned Lotus supercentre. Therefore, CP became a minor shareholder of Lotus supercentre, holding only 10.71 per cent at the beginning of 2000 (PrachaChat ThuraKit 1998).
The company attracting the most attention because of its efficiency is the third placed Samsung Tesco. Business Week (2002) This company which has been rated highly for succeeding in Korea among the foreign investment retail companies had 12 stores out of 14 that exceeded a turnover of 400 million Won (approximately US$0.3 million) in a single day.
