He made Cypress a conglomerate of small companies so that he could be aware of what exactly was going on each company and not have a huge unmanageable company on his hands.

The killer software
Even though the killer software might promote efficiency, its modus operandi can leave people unhappy. People might feel like they are being watched all the time, their progress being measured not just by their bosses, but also their colleagues and juniors. It can be humiliating and pressurizing if an employee can’t complete a task within the given time frame and everybody knows about it thus reducing his enthusiasm and will to work.
