“Employee preference for working hours” is one of the major current issue taking places in hospitality
industry. To be true, managers have never paid require attention towards this issue. This issue was there
forever, but now time has changed. In the competitive market of today if employer wants to gain
100%of the employee output then he have to provide employee with comfortable and friendly
atmosphere.” Working hours” are very much part of this atmosphere. The trigger to this issue came
after international economical changes like high oil prices. Economies of countries are changing, and so
does the employee needs. For example- employee might be looking for flexible hours in order to save
transport cost or may want more hours to keep himself financially fit to survive in this expensive
economy.
Moreover generation x expectations from employers are way much different from the old employees.
Now everyone wants to work in their comfort zone. It doesn’t mean they are not hard working, but
they prefer to be called as smart than hard working.
Another important reason for this trigger in preference of working hours is changing attitude of
companies. More and more companies are getting aware of the fact that they have to provide
employees better environment than it used to be so that they do not loose good employees as turnover
ratio in hospitality is much more higher than the past.
