Envy

Through my studies with the bible, I have found three different examples of the deadly sin envy.  In each of the following examples you will see brothers turn against brothers and a mother turn against a son.
    In the story of Cain and Able, (Genesis 4) Able was their families flock keeper while Cain worked the soil.  Every so often they would sacrifice a portion of what they have grown. During this sacrifice, Able brought fat portions from some of his first born of the flock and Cain brought some of his fruits from the soil.  God looked with favor at Abel after his offering, but did not do the same for Cain. Cain grew very angry or envious of his brother.  Later Cain asked his brother to come out to the field for a while with him. Little to Abel’s knowledge Cain was planning to attack him when he was out there in the field.  Abel died that day and Cain was cursed by God to wonder the earth for no dirt will produce fruit for him now.
    In the story of Jacob getting Isaac’s blessing (Genesis 27), the father of two sons Jacob and Esau is preparing for his own death. So he sends his oldest son to bring him some game and prepare him a meal. After that meal Isaac plans to give his son his blessing.  Rebekah the mother finds out that Isaac plans to give his blessing to Esau, she makes up a plan of her own. In this plan of hers she wanted to trick Isaac into giving Jacob his blessing. So she has her favorite son Jacob to some of the game that they already had and made the same meal that Esau planned to make for his father.  She also took Esau’s best clothes for Jacob to wear.  Esau was a very hairy man, so Rebeka had Jacob wear a goat skin to create that hair that he did not have.  So while E ...
