Demonstrating Communication Skills
The first topic on the agenda is demonstrating communicating skills. Anyone and everyone will have their own method of managing any given situation. In a family setting at home to the work setting, everyone communicates differently. It is important to be clear and concise with the directions you are giving. An effective leader or supervisor has a good line of communication with his or her employees. It is a good practice to always leave the communication “door” open. Gallo (2008) lists five ways he feels helps Generation Y adapt, “Don't manage, mentor, don't assign, explain, don't dictate, solicit, don't ignore, respond, don't conceal, communicate” (p. 1).
Great communication skills should be demonstrated with patience. Important enough is to apply leadership style to communicating effectively with coworkers. This is done by listening to their triumphs, concerns, questions, and even their personal experiences. Listening is important because it shows that the supervisor cares and allows the coworkers to open up when they feel the need to. No matter how busy a supervisor might be, always show happiness to help them. Gallo (2008) explains, “Allocate more of your time to developing staff” (p.1).
