The majority of Men and Women’s magazines differ so much in content that you would expect their respective ads to be different as well. In most ways that is true, but surprisingly the ads are somewhat similar. I would expect a magazine that is geared towards women to have advertisements that stick to the obvious, and that would be clothing and cosmetics. On the other hand I would expect a men’s magazine to have advertisements such as cigarettes, alcohol, and vehicles. Not only would I expect the above products to be advertised in each sexes respective magazine, but also I would expect the women’s magazine to have at least twice the amount of ads. Boy was I wrong. The amounts of advertisement in a magazine along with the products being portrayed are not only dissimilar they are almost incomparable, but the marketing techniques being used are expectedly similar.
Sports Illustrated is my favorite magazine, and Weekly Celebrity Living is one of my Sister’s favorites. My Sister and I have few similarities. She is into fashion, and I am into sports; so the advertisements in each respective magazine should be different. They are, but in a way that I wasn’t expecting. While Sports Illustrated had nearly 30 different ads Weekly Celebrity Living had only three actual advertisements. I was expecting there to be around 50 ads in my Sister’s magazine. This idea that there would be more came from the concept that Women shop more frequently then Men. I have no answer for the huge contrast in the amount of ads. All I can say is that I was shocked.
