Genex Memo

To: CEO of Genex Fuels
Problem Statement:
Prior to Devlin taking the role of CIO, Genex’s IT department was in three functional divisions.  In each of these divisions, information was held on a variety of technologies and mediums, many of which are outdated and not compatible with each other. Genex has not yet employed any standards or integration tactics for the information that they wish to be compiled into one functional IT division.  As well, the company currently succumbs to a lag in real-time decision-making, sub-optimal accessibility and the risk of over 2 billion dollars worth of physical assets.
Recommendations:
The first recommendation deals with integrating the data into a centralized information system (SAP R3)
While this is the most tedious process, the fact that Genex has done well without employing a consolidated information system is very surprising.  The CEO of the company wants to implement a SAP R3 Database, and since this technology will ensure that the information is centralized and easy-to-access, it will help Genex transform from employing a feudal governance structure to becoming an IT Duopoly.
By modernizing and consolidating their information system, this recommendation will help the divisions in Genex make timely decisions, improve efficiency and ensure consistency so they can take advantage of using technology competitively.  For example, since the SAP R3 has the unique functionality of a complete development environment, users can develop their own functions such as reports by modifying the existing SAP code. This will aid Genex in making informed decisions about properties whenever they make their bi-monthly sales, as all known information can be included in the decision making process.
