GREAT EXPECTATIONS: Bill Gates
Once the richest man in the world, Bill Gates, is not a new face for many people. He not only
revolutionized the computer world, but also spent millions of dollars to make the world a better
place. This week he left his 'fate builder' Microsoft Corporation and will
be active in the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, a humanitarian
organization founded by himself and his wife Melinda.
This week SharedTalks has decided to post his speech which he delivered
at the University of Harvard, USA, on 7 July 2007. In fact, he himself had
joined Harvard, but dropped out soon in order to quench his thirst of selfinnovation.
Remembering his days at Harvard, he said,
"Radcliffe was a great place to live. There were more women up there, and
most of the guys were science-math types. That combination offered me
the best odds, if you know what I mean. This is where I learned the sad
lesson that improving your odds doesn't guarantee success."

Commencement address at Harvard University, June 7, 2007


President Bok,
former President Rudenstine, incoming President Faust,
members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers,
members of the faculty, parents, and especially, the graduates:
I've been waiting more than 30 years to say this: "Dad, I always told you I'd come back and get my
degree."
I want to thank Harvard for this timely honor. I'll be changing my job next year and it will be nice to
finally have a college degree on my resume.
