Homelessness
You see them everyday as you pass by the alleys on your way to your job. You act like you don’t recognize them and think that they don’t notice you in your four-button suit sipping your four dollar Starbucks, but in all reality they watch as you walk by, thinking to themselves if only I was given a chance, if only I had it to do over again, then it would be different. I’m talking about homeless people. People who under their circumstances cant afford a house, little on the luxuries that we enjoy everyday. Our movement that once dealt with the poor and needy has moved it focus to the well-off and independent middle-upper class America. One might ask the question “Am I my brother’s keeper,” another “Who is my brother,” but in all actuality we need to be saying “Here am I Lord! Send me!”
In order to fully understand a homeless person, we must first define what homeless means. Wikipedia defines it as, “…the condition and social category of people who lack housing, because they cannot afford, or are otherwise unable to maintain, regular, safe, and adequate shelter.” The question still remains on how this person has reached this state, but we can understand that they cannot afford housing. Some causes for such poverty could be natural disasters in which the person’s home is destroyed and they (for the time being) are left on the street without any adequate shelter. Drugs are another cause for homelessness in that when one becomes addicted they will eventually sacrifice any and all material belongings for another “high”.
