Consumer durables industry in Bangladesh has been in existence mainly since the 1980s and has been mainly dependant on imported products to cater to growing demand. The sector comprises of two segments: Consumer Electronics (i.e. Television, VCD/DVD, Home theatre, Music player, Camera etc) and White Goods (i.e. Washing Machine, Air Conditioner, Refrigerator, Dish washer, Heaters, Kitchen & non-kitchen appliances, Personal care products etc). Consumer durables market in Bangladesh is estimated to be more than BDT 24B currently. YOY market growth rate is estimated to be around 20%. Growth in the sector is supported by increase in disposable income, emergence of double-income families, increased media exposure & consumerism, improvement in technology and urbanization. Penetration level is very low in Bangladesh compared to other countries which translates to vast unrealized potential. Considering the factors a growth rate of ???% is projected in the future.

Demand is highly seasonal as certain products have higher sale during particular periods of the year. For example, refrigerators have higher sales during Eid festivities while there is a sharp increase in sales of television during major sports events. The industry is characterised by strong competition. However, competition is concentrated on the major cities as product sale is clustered in such manner. About 80% sale takes place in the metropolitan cities. The top players in the industry are Butterfly (LG, Butterfly), Transcom (Phillips & Whirlpool), Rangs Electronics Ltd (Sony, Toshiba, Canon) etc. Presence of cheap Chinese or Korean imports (i.e. Konka, TCL, Walton, Hisense, Hayes & Hayer or Changhong) in the market substantially affects market dynamics.
