Michael is focused on the wrong aspect of his job. It seams that he is focused on who is taking the job replacement of Lucien Beaumont, Lafleur SA's President of U.S. Operations of. “Instead of defining healthy competition as bad and avoiding a colleague like Danielle-who has reached out to him more than once-he needs to, first, think about what he really wants to do with his career and his life and, second, gain a greater appreciation for the social alliances that make an organization run” (Cohen, 2005).
Michael first needs to find and weigh out what dependencies he has, not only with his workplace but his home life as well. He obviously is a little excited to get a job offer in China from the CEO, but he seams a little with held from jumping at this opportunity. Michael has a wife who has a career. His wife has already changed her job position once to accommodate for his career, though she is willing to do it again if it meant his happiness. He also has a child, a twelve year old. He has to out weigh the fact that his child could be at a point in life that is stable and might be doing well in school. With moving to a different county, Michael has to ask himself how this will affect not only his wife but his child’s stability and self confidence. As coming into a teenager can be a very tough time in one’s life. Michael also has a few ties to work, which do not sound to with holding. It sounds like Michael is afraid if he accepts the offer to move and advance his career in China that his opportunity at the open position of Lafleur SA's President of U.S. Operations might be neglected all together.
