Christianity and Islam
Religion continues to be an important factor in the everyday life of the majority of the world’s population. Even in what we call secular society it still has a role in politics, family life and culture. Given that fact, one can not hope to understand human behavior without first getting familiar with the similarities and differences in the belief systems that have shaped world history for thousands of years.
Christianity and Islam are the world’s largest religions, both having more than one billion followers. They are both Abrahamic religions, because they developed from several Judaic beliefs. Jesus Christ is an important person in both religions and they both strive for the Salvation from eternal damnation. But around him are also their major differences. While Christians belief that Jesus was a divine figure that was part of the Trinity, Muslims think that he was just a prophet and that God is one and undividable.
Christians and Muslims believe in the God from the Old Testament, so the origin of both is the Jewish religion. It can also be said that Islam originates from Christianity, because Jesus is an important prophet in it. The story held most important in Judaism is that of Abraham, because of his willingness to sacrifice his own son on God’s command, which is considered an ideal for obedience to God. The difference is that Christians consider themselves the spiritual descendants of Abraham, because his biological descendants, according to the Bible - the Jewish people, rejected Jesus as the Messiah. According to Islam there is a genealogy of prophets from Abraham to Mohammed and his son Ishmael has an important part of it. Ishmael is also considered the ancestor of Arab people.
