• Historical Information
o The Organization’s original primary goal was to overthrow the Egyptian Government and replace it with an Islamic state.
o They are Islamic Fundamentalists
o The Jihads began in the late 1970’s
o Previous attacks include:
? October 6, 1981; assassination of Anwar Sadat.
? August 1993; Al-Jihad attempted to kill the Egyptian Interior Minister, Hasan al-Alfi. Who was leading a crackdown on Islamic militants and their terror campaign.
? A few months later in November Al-Jihad made another bombing attempt, this time to kill Egypt’s Prime Minister, Aref Sidqi.
? June 1995; another failed attempt to assassinate Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak while he was in Ethiopia for a conference.
o States That Sponsor:
? Sudan,
? Afghanistan
? Iran.
o The group is nationally sponsored because its more than one country, but locally supported because some of those in it’s own country.
• Chain of Command
o In June of 2001, Al Queda and The Jihads merged into one formally call jamaa’at Qa’idat al-Jihad, with the leader leadership EIJ who occupies six of nine seats of Al Qaeda’s ruling counsel. This groups is also known as “Qaeda al-Jihad” al-Zawahri is frequently referred to as a ‘lieutenant’ or ‘second in command.’ The modern al-Qaeda organization is a combination of Bin-Laden’s financial resources with al-Zawahri’s ideological and operational leadership.
