In the beginning a young man named Damon entered the business world with nothing more than a dream of owning a Porsche. This was his primary motivation to keep working hard and moving forward with careers which, at times, were not going anywhere or, during other times, kept him on a track of ambition and success. Having the goal of owning a high performance car meets all the “SMART” requirements so using this measurement as a gauge of success seems appropriate.
Much has changed over the years – priorities, direction, locations and careers – but, in the end, the Porsche is still the goal. Damon’s story is not new – having a goal or target and striving to achieve that goal. Finding companies that value people and performance which would motivate him to keep focused on achieving goals both short term and long has been the largest obstacle. To succeed Damon needs to leverage his behaviors with those of the company to motivate others and help them achieve their goals and dreams. He realized long ago to be successful he must not only be a model employee himself but make others around him models of excellence also.
Initially Damon’s focus was money. After all money would be needed to buy the Porsche. He worked for jobs where he felt he could make significant money and capture his dream sooner than later. However, our protagonist encountered poor managers, poor work environments, disgruntled employees, marriage, children and maturity.
