Keys To Successful Management

While analyzing the phrase Successful Management one would have to assume not every business, corporation, or organization has established a successful management team to facilitate the different functions of a company. When looking at the recent scandals that have taken place such as Enron and WorldCom, the accuracy of this statement should be clear. By definition, management is the act or art of managing: the conducting or supervising of something as a business (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). In order for an organization to develop a successful management team they must establish the four functions of management.  In this review I will examine the four functions of management; planning, organizing, leading and controlling. I will also explore the impacts these four functions have on the organization I am associated with which is the Dietary and Food Service Department at a very prestigious hospital.

Planning Function of Management
     The planning function of management is the first step any organization must take to ensure success. This function requires an organization to evaluate its company’s current and to determine what direction the company is headed. Within this step of planning, organizations use logic and decision making to establish goals and objectives. Because of external factors which could be consider both positive and negative the process of planning is an ongoing function. The company in which I am associated with has brilliant visionaries, who came up with the idea to implement a hotel style room service in a hospital setting to boost the morale of sick patients.
