For most people in modern, urbanized societies, the principal form of contact with animals is at meal times. The use of animals for food is probably the oldest and the most widespread form of animal use. Since the beginning of civilization, mankind has been surviving by hunting and feeding on animals. With human evolution, animals became commodities traded for other benefits in return. As society evolved into present day, animals can be bought for a price deemed reasonable by the market. The issue at hand is not the killing of the animals, but the treatment and care they receive while they are still alive. The two main players in the debate are the business owners who seek economic profit versus activist groups who want humane treatment of animals.
As a result of commercialization, animals have been sacrificed for the purpose of being bought and sold by wholesaler or distributors to end consumers. Large organizations have emerged as a result of this profitable industry. In the context of the fast food industry, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and McDonalds can be considered giants in the fast food industry profiting significantly by slaughtering animals to produce their main products. From a corporate perspective, in order to offer affordable meat prices to customers, organizations tolerate methods of procuring meat such as; hold animals in cramped quarters, not providing proper dietary needs or sanitary conditions.3
