Leading Change
Good Sport manufactures fitness equipment such as treadmills, bikes, steppers, and rowers. The company was founded 15 years ago by ex-basketball star Jason Poole who is now the chairman of the board. The organization sells products to hospitals, clubs, hotels, and residential houses. Recent results have been good for the company and it is now expanding into neighboring states.
Briefly describe Good Sport. What organizational structure is in place at the organization?
The organizational structure that exists at Good Sport is a functional structure. A functional structure organizes employees around specific knowledge or resources (McShane, Von Glinow (2005) chapter 15, p.22). This is evident because each person with sales experience is grouped into the Sales department; employees with manufacturing skills are grouped in the Production department. Standardization of the work processes in Good Sport is the most common form of coordination used in a functional structure (McShane, Von Glinow (2005) chapter 15, p.22). The structure of Good Sport has allowed a professional identity and clear career paths. The functional structure has created common pools of talent that helps everyone in the organization (McShane, Von Glinow (2005) chapter 15, p.22). The specialization serves this organization well developing new products and getting them to the market. The close proximity of the department allows each member in each department the ability to discuss problems with fellow experts and make the units’ pool of knowledge greater. Good Sport has allowed the administrative and technical continuity within and between different projects.
