M-Commerce
Multiple Definitions
To first understand m-commerce, we must understand commerce.
Commerce is, simply put the exchange of goods and services, usually for
money. When you buy something at a grocery store, you are participating in
commerce. There is no precise definition for mobile commerce or mobile e-
commerce. Mobile commerce or m-commerce is part of the shift of
technology into mainstream business and everyday life. It is the use of
handheld wireless devices such as mobile phones and palm pilots to
communicate, interact and transact via high-speed connection to the Internet.”
(Australian, 2008, p. 1) Every analyst, vendor and trade magazine appears to
have a slightly different interpretation of the term. Most agree that because e-
commerce came first, m-commerce is the little brother. Maybe within the next
year, we will come to a consensus on m-commerce. Until then, here are
some examples.
“Business-to-consumer transactions conducted from a mobile device.” (J.P. Morgan)
“E-Commerce over mobile devices.” (Robinson-Humphrey)
“The use of wireless technologies to provide convenient personalized and location-based services to your customers, employees and partners.” (Mobilocity)
