A. Organizational Structure of the U S Air Force: As far as the structure of the US Air Force is concerned it is well defined and scientifically designed to meet the challenges of a combat force. A section can be formed by two or more airmen. Airman is the single air force member. Two or more sections can form a flight. There are three types of flights such as Numbered, Alpha, and Functional. Elements with specific missions constitute functional flights. The lowest level of command is a squadron and it is formed by two or more flights. Two or more such squadrons forms a group and groups are normally assigned with the functions based on the squadrons. Two or more groups form a wing and there will be normally a single wing in an Air Force Base. The wing will be commanded by a wing commander. Wings are of two types such as composite and objective. More than one kind of aircraft is operated by a composite wing. The tasks such as Streamlining, consolidation of responsibility and clarifying the line of command are performed by the objective wing. Irrespective of the function of the wing every wing conform s to the concept of “one base, one wing, one commander”. Wing will be commanded by an officer of the rank of Brigadier General. Air force wings will be directly reporting to the Major Command (MAJCOM).Major commands will be organized as per the primary mission. Therefore the major commands are named as Air combat command, Air force education and training command etc. as per the mission. Overseas major commands will be named area wise such as United Air force Europe (USAFE) and the Pacific Air forces (PACAF).
