1. Is it ethical to charge high prices for drugs?
No. It is unethical to charge high prices when the American public is being charged for this in many other ways.
The drug manufacturers are taking advantage of the critical need of people to get well and maintain good health. Drug manufacturers try to justify charging high price by citing the most of R & D, as well as assistance to third world countries. However, there should be a limit set to how high their prices should be.
The average American family has been affected in their quality life due in part to having to pay high prices for medicines when they get sick. In many cases, they cannot afford it.
We already are incurring in the high cost of health insurance and Medicaid, under this system.
2. From an ethical standpoint, how should prices for different drugs be set?
The ethical way of setting drug prices does not coincide with a capitalistic society. However, putting politics aside, the public should be charge for medicines based on their means. The most vulnerable in the society (i.e. the elderly and children) should have complete government subsides.
The essential medicines treating common decease like diabetes, depression, and pain should be regulated by the government, regardless if there is a new medicine or a generic one should be affordable to the people.
