   1. When did personal computers first appear?

IBM introduced its microcomputers or also known as personal computers in 1982. IBM and its name were universally adopted, and today the term personal computer is used, along with microcomputer, to describe the small, relatively inexpensive and powerful system used for both business and personal applications.

   2. What is an information specialist? Provide four examples.

      Information specialist = are employees who have a full-time responsibility for developing and operating information system.

      Examples:  programmers, database administrators, network specialists, and webmasters.

   3. What are the main functions of the CPU and RAM?

      CPU = the central processing unit controls all the other components.

      RAM = random access memory acts as the temporary workplace for the CPU; the greater the work area, the more quickly the CPU can accomplish tasks.

   4. How is the communications speed of a cable modem different from a traditional modem that connects to a telephone line?

      A computer at home may use a modem connected to a telephone running at 56Kbps or to your cable television connection running at speeds as high as 2Mbps.

   5. What data transmission speeds can you expect for direct computer-to-computer communications? What is a common transmission speed you might find for wireless computer communications?
