Conflict is often perceived negatively and is defined by Laura Stack defines conflict in the AMT Contributor (a source of information on the internet) as follows:
Conflict is:
- competitive or opposing action of incompatibles, antagonistic state or active (divergent ideas, interests or persons)
- Mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes or external or internal demands.
- The pursuit of incompatible goals such that gains to one side come about an expense to the other. By these definitions, someone is going to win and someone is going to lose.
However, not all conflict is negative or bad. In fact, conflict leads to growth and change, among other things. As said in the AMT contributor (a source of information on the internet), when conflict exists it generally indicates commitment to organizational goals, because the players (employees) are trying to come with the best solution. This in turn, promotes challenge, heightens individual potential and regard to the issue and increases effort.
POSITIVE APPROCH OF CONFLICT CAN INCLUDE:
- Improvement in quality decisions. I.e. as there will be ideas from different people, there will be a range and variety of ideas, and each individual will try to do their best to come up with a acceptable idea.
- It will stimulate involvement in the discussion. Meaning that when conflict arises, it will make everyone present to get actively involved in the discussion, contribute their ideas and justify reasons for the ideas they put forward ...
