Creativity and innovation are two of the most important attributes of a successful company.  As innovation begins with creative ideas, enhancing the frequency and the level of creative ideas is a very important issue to companies. Research has discovered that the environment has a strong impact on both. Therefore understanding the role the environment can play is particularly important.

Environmental stimulants & obstacles to creativity
-    Study with 120 R&D scientists from more than 20 corporations
-    Interviews: participants asked for examples of high/low creativity

Analysis of the interviews reveals 9 qualities of environments that promote creativity (“Stimulants”):
1)    Freedom
2)    Good Project Management
3)    Sufficient Resources
4)    Encouragement
5)    Various Organizational Characteristics (e.g. atmosphere where innovation is prized and failure is not fatal)
6)    Recognition
7)    Sufficient time
8)    Challenge
9)    Pressure

… 9 qualities of environments that inhibit creativity (“obstacles”):
1)    Various Organizational Characteristics (e.g. inappropriate reward system)
2)    Constraint
3)    Organizational Disinterest
4)    Poor Project Management
5)    Evaluation
6)    Insufficient Resources
7)    Time Pressure
8)    Overemphasis
9)    Competition
