Background Information:
In 1942 the Mosse family purchased an old flour mill in Bennettsbridge, Co Kilkenny.  This mill was later to become the home to Nicholas Mosse Pottery.  Nicholas Mosse Pottery was established by Nick Mosse in 1975.  Nick Mosse started out as a journeyman potter picking up skills and techniques in France, Scotland, UK and Japan before returning to Ireland to set up his own craft ceramics business.  When the company was first established there was very little staff which in turn meant that as little as 200 items were produced per week.  Nick’s wife Susan has had a major effect on the success of Nicholas Mosse Pottery.  Her “shrewd business acumen and great ability to read market trends” has helped significantly with the growth of the company.
After only 3 years the company grew from strength to strength and was incorporated in 1978.  There were now 6000 items being produced per week, a huge increase from the 200 in 1975.
Between 2000 and 2004 the company’s gross profit increased from €930,083 to €1,118,549.  The success of Nicholas Mosse pottery has been helped along the way by enterprise Ireland.  From the infant stage of the company enterprise Ireland has helped in many ways such as “opening doors” for the company in the UK and USA markets allowing them to demonstrate their production techniques in large department stores like Bloomingdales.
The Bennettsbridge mill is now a “Four Storey mini paradise for tourists and craft enthusiasts.
