Drawing on the Literature, Outline Key Factors That Influence The
Effectiveness of a Group
Most of the work activities in organization today are performed by groups. A group can be defined as two or more individuals who join together for a particular purpose ( Ivan et al. 1997, p. 294). Generally, organization categorized two basic groups as informal and formal groups (ibid.). Informal group in an organization is formed naturally by the shared interests and personal liking, whereas, formal group works on a common purpose over a designated tasks assigned by the organization towards the fulfillment of group effectiveness.
As defined by Lewis and Slade (Cited in lecture noted, MCB 2008, p.51), group effectiveness refers the state of achievement from the collaborative efforts that reinforce by the complementary skills of team members, working together towards the organization direction.
The aim of this paper is to discuss the factors that influence group effectiveness. They are many of them, indeed. But in view of the word constraint here, only three main factors will be chosen for discussions, they are: group size, leadership and communication skills.
The size of the group is one of the key elements that influence group effectiveness. According to Katzenbach and Smith (2001, p.89), a small group between 5-10 people is the ideal number that allow flexibility on the meeting arrangement. If the group is greater than 15, group members will face the difficulty to accommodate to each other’s calendar (ibid.). The clashes on the timetable procrastinating the decision making process that eventually leaving the issue unresolved in a promptly manner.
