The Gilded Six-Bits is a story of love, respect, happiness, jealousy, betrayal, and forgiveness. Even though Missie May and her husband Joe didn’t own very much, the wealth of their love more than made up for what they lacked in belongings. Their love was much like that of storybook romances. The two had great love and respect for each other, and Joe did all he could to make Missie May happy. This was evident in his weekly tradition of buying her things and taking her out on Saturday evening. I think everything was good between the two until the visit to the ice cream parlor. I don’t think Missie May was interested in Otis Slemmons at first, even though Joe bragged about him being well traveled and good-looking. None of that interested Missie May, because Joe was all the man she needed or wanted. Maybe because Joe had never seen or known of a black man having his own business, he may have been a little taken with the fact of actually having a man of such caliber in town. This lead him to sort of put Otis on a pedestal of sorts. After all, the men in town made their money from hard work and sweat. I think what really got Missie May’s curiosity up, was when Joe told her of Otis having gold teeth, a pin made of gold and a ten dollar gold piece on his watch chain and how he(Joe) wish that it was him. In a way, it seemed as though Joe was jealous of the fact that Otis had expensive things without having to work hard for them and he was working hard for so long, and could not. I think that it bothered Missie May that she was unable to give her husband that one thing to make him happy, when he was always bringing her special treats home to make her smile. That idea is probably what led her to betray her ...
