Motivation refers to the forces either internal or external to a person that arise enthusiasm and persistence to pursue a certain course of action. Motivation can be: Intrinsic and it can be Extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is the internal desires to perform a particular task, people do certain activities because it gives them pleasure, develops a particular skill, or it’s morally the right thing to do. Extrinsic motivation is the factors external to the individual and unrelated to the task, they are performing. Examples include money, good grades, and other rewards. Extrinsic motivation exists when the source of the motivation comes from outside the employee by way of rewards or punishment. According to the principles of extrinsic motivation, people will work hard if we offer good performance appraisal ratings, incentives, prizes, salary increases, and promotional opportunities (i.e., rewards). They will also work hard to avoid the negatives, such as poor performance appraisal ratings, discipline, or dismissal (i.e., punishment). External motivation is a very powerful motivator. We cannot say that in that particular organization all the employees are intrinsically motivated or all the employees are extrinsically motivated because in every organization some employees are intrinsically motivated and some are extrinsically motivated. According to a survey conducted in government sector in May 2008 it is concluded that employees of top level are intrinsically motivated and employees of low level are extrinsically motivated. May be its reason is that low level employees has to fulfill their basic needs , first it can be salary then he needs job security then he needs healthy relations with colleagues then he needs ...
