The PhD program in Organizational Behaviour and Industrial Relations (OBIR) is designed to train students for careers in scholarly research. The coursework normally takes two years to complete after which students take a written comprehensive exam, and then move on to dissertation work. Graduates typically pursue careers in academic or research institutions.
A variety of social science disciplines are relevant to the study of human behaviour in organizations. The field is often described in terms of two broad components: micro organizational behaviour and macro organizational behaviour. The first focuses on how individuals and groups affect and are affected by organizations, drawing primarily on psychology and sociology. The second focuses on organizational systems, relations among organizations, and organizations in their environments, drawing on sociology, strategy, and economics. A major strength of the program is that it emphasizes both qualitative and quantitative approaches in research, and encourages multiple perspectives.
Two distinguishing features of the doctoral program in Organizational Behaviour and Industrial Relations are the broad interdisciplinary training and flexibility it offers. Students are able to shape the training around their own research interests once they have completed the core requirements. We encourage students to undertake interdisciplinary research drawing on the faculty resources within the Schulich School and the broader York community. Our students are currently doing research in diverse areas such as business ethics, technology and organizations, and non-profit organizations.
