Native Americans and the New World Settlers
     When the Europeans began to arrive in American they found a thriving Native American Indian culture that was totally diverse and unlike their own. Around the time the Europeans “discovered” American, there were more than ten million Indian of tribes of all types and cultures living in the Western Hemisphere.  When the Europeans arrived in America around the 16th century the Indians were fascinated by their white complexions, the clothes they wore, and the ships the traveled in. The Indians greeted them with great enthusiasm because they had brought with them wonderful technology that consisted of steel knives and swords, fire-belching arms and cannon, mirrors, hawk bells and earrings, copper and brass kettles, and so on (North American Indians). They brought technology that was totally unfamiliar to the Indians.
     In the beginning the Europeans and the Indians were friendly and helpful to one another.  However, the Indian culture had a respect for the earth, animals. “The Europeans on the other hand were absolutely unaware and did not have the same regard for nature. The Europeans regarded the earth and nature, from the Indian perspective as more of obstacle, even an enemy. “It only a commodity; the forest was so many board feet of timber, a beaver colony so many pelts, a herd of buffalo so many robes and tongues” (pg 1). They viewed the Indians as a resource that could be used to further the purpose of the European Kings and Queens.
