Explanation of Nike Inc.’s internal and external factors impacted the four functions of management:
     Predating the Swoosh, and even before Nike in general, there were two visionary men: Phillip Knight and Bill Bowerman, who pioneered a revolution in athletic footwear that redefined an industry. The name Nike is globally synonymous with sport. They are the world’s leading supplier of athletic shoes and apparel. Their symbol – an overly-emphasized artistic check mark, as well as their slogan, “Just do it” is known the world round, reaching even the smallest alleyways and sweat shops of a poverty-torn non-English speaking third world country. Nike’s rise to the top began in 1962 where an idea formulated by two men launched an innovation to bring a low-priced, high-tech, athletic shoe from Japan, through a German gateway, to America where it would eventually dominate the U.S. market, changing the athletic footwear industry forever (Nike, 2007, pg. 5). The name Nike comes from the Greek meaning, “Greek winged goddess of victory.” The company continues to lead their employees to endless possibilities for human potential, including sports. By controlling and monitoring the company’s worldwide operations, along with constant product development and tracking of an ever-changing market, new goals are established, and Nike, Inc. continues to be the largest and most recognizable name in both sports and fitness apparel around the globe.
