Individual Reflection Essay.
Introduction
Composition:
The composition of this group was very diverse in terms of demographic differences between people, such as the age, gender and ethnicity of the individuals. The group comprised of 4 female members (Members A, B, C, D) and one male member (Member E), 2 Chinese members and 3 English speaking members and finally one member was 31 years old, another was 23 years old and the rest were 22 years old. Some researchers would be in support of heterogeneity in groups, due to its ability to posses a broad range of task-relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities and members with different opinions and perspectives, whereas others would think homogenous groups are more successful (Kochan and Bezrukova, 2003). In our case, I felt that it placed us at a disadvantage to some extent, as the objectives and attitudes of some didn’t match the objectives and attitudes of others. Our group compositions followed the notions proposed by the ‘social categorisation perspective’ in that the similarities and difference between the members shaped the foundations of classifying self and others into separate groups, distinguishing between similar in-group members and dissimilar out-group members. According to Berscheid and Reis, (1998), the social categorisation perspective places emphasis on the interpersonal similarities in attitudes and values as being the main determinants of interpersonal attraction.
