Organizational Structures Within The Commerce Insurance Company

The Commerce Insurance Company has long been considered a “Massachusetts-only” company (Commerce).  Recently, through expansions and acquisitions, they have made their presence known in several states including New Hampshire, California, Arizona, Ohio, and Tennessee, among other states.  As a result, Commerce consists of thee companies:  Commerce Insurance Company in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, American Commerce Insurance Company (ACIC) in Arizona, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Washington; and Commerce West in California, Arizona, and Oregon (Commerce).  For the purpose of this paper, I am only focusing on Commerce and ACIC as Commerce West operates as its own entity.  Despite growing out of state within the past ten years, Commerce has made a few changes and has kept several operations the same.  Today, Commerce has a matrix organization combining both functional organization and regional organization.  Human Resources and Knowledge have both remained mostly functional, with a few exceptions, and this has proved to be effective throughout the years.
The Human Resources is broken down into a few different departments:  Benefits, Career Center, Compensation, and Learning & Development (CICNET).  Each person within the department specializes in a particular topic.  For example, Jane Pye is the Manager of Compensation and Benefits.  Karen Gagnon is the Senior Benefits Consultant and specializes in Wellness, the Employee Assistance Plan, Service Awards, and AAA.  Lorry Vecchione is ...
