US’s Hurricane Katrina Response vs. Global Tsunami Response



      Natural and disaster. The two words have powerful meanings by themselves but when paired together their new meaning is even more powerful. When one speaks of natural disasters one speaks of the terror and chaos that comes with them. Natural disasters have been plaguing man since the dawn of our existence in both how they been destroying mankind’s achievements and lives. Man, however, has learned to accept and to cope with the fact that natural disasters will always be around and that when they occur our civilization has to be able to regroup, recuperate, and move on.  At this day and age we have found out that we can handle most average natural disasters and keep on being productive in our societies. It’s when we’re faced with the most powerful and devastating natural disasters that the flaws in some of our societies become exposed, however. When one compares the tragedies of two of the most powerful natural disasters in recent history in the Indian Ocean Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, this becomes an evident fact. The U.S.’s response to Hurricane Katrina compared to the world’s response to the Asian Tsunami was unacceptable.
      In its aftermath Hurricane Katrina was announced to be the costliest and deadliest hurricane in the United States history (“Hurricane Katrina” 1). Before any of the damage had even been done, however, the hurricane had been forming in the waters near the area of the Bahamas. There in the Bahamas the hurricane claimed a few lives even in its
