Philosophy

Teaching is said to be a wonderful means to a desired end. Personally I cannot think of anything more rewarding or important than to know that I am contributing to the education of the future generations of this nation.  I consider it to be my most important function to help students learn to make good decisions and become good citizens.  As a music teacher it is my duty to not only educate the musicians, but the entire student.  I will aid them in developing good habits in the music classroom that can transfer to all other areas of their lives. I feel that it is vital for my students to leave my class with the basic musicianship abilities of reading music, listen to music analytically and learn how to use music to express themselves appropriately.
 
I believe that the best way to create the environment that will foster these goals is to know the students that I have in my classroom.  This means that I will get to know them on teacher-student basis and be able to give them the skills that enable them to acquire the knowledge I want them to known in the best way possible. The most effective way to do this will be to present ideas and concepts in more than one way.  I find that having some physical manifestation of what we are learning is a very effective way to instruct the young musicians.
 
When teaching music I should relate music and musical concepts to their daily lives.  This gives them a form of tangible connection between the music in class and what is important to them.  For example taking the responsibility to learn the melody line and then teach it to the class reinforces their musicianship and teaches them responsibility and preparedness.  This can help them be more effective in their entire li ...
