Could there be a more fitting name for a place to unite the Democratic Party? Perhaps not. Unity, New Hampshire is setting the stage for Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama efforts for party unity. The town only has a population of 1700 people, but the symbolism affects millions of voters across the nation.
“It wasn’t that nasty,” said Colorado political analyst Guy Stagger. “We become so attuned on every little thing within a 24 hour news cycle that it gets blown out of proportion.”
For some, the reunion between Obama and Clinton seems more like a divorce than a marriage. And like all power couple divorces, it involves money. Clinton has run up an unprecedented amount of debt during her campaign. She owes vendors more than $10 million. She owes herself about as much. This week, as part of the cooperation effort Barack and Michelle Obama donated $4,600, each $2,300 the maximum contribution allowed.
Considering that Obama turned down public funds for the general election, Obama needs Clinton supporters. And simultaneously, Clinton needs Obama contributors to help decrease her debt. Today, these issues are closer to being resolved.
Obama has been courting Clinton supporters and donors. “Our party and our country are better off because of her. And I am a better candidate for having had the honor to compete with Hillary Rodham Clinton.” However, pundits warn of catering too much.
“It serves no one’s interests for Obama to come together with Clinton and pander to every voting block,” said Stagger. “He needs to be careful to not be overly accommodating because he’s top dog. And dogs have to bark occasionally.”...
