1.0 Introduction
Saving Private Ryan is a war film set in the Europe of 1944 during the D-Day invasion of Normandy which was part of World War II. The background of this film is based on the history where the Nazi troops were still advancing Western Europe, conquering cities and entire nations. The Allied forces tried to plan a strike back to the Germans which was part of the greatest invasion in history where they tried to hold up the German attack and forced them into retreat mode using a crushing blow of attack with 3000 landing craft, 13000 aircrafts, 2500 other ships and 500 naval vessels heading towards French coast. This opening scene starts with a battlefield where the American troops were invading Omaha Beach, France on June 6th, 1944. Captain John Miller arrived with his troops at the beach where he witnessed hundreds of soldiers got killed and injured as the German troops were protecting their territories. Captain Miller was instructed to assume a special mission with seven soldiers to track down and attempt to rescue an American soldier, Private James Ryan and bring him back to his mum as all his four brothers involved in the war were killed. Captain Miller’s troops were having conflicts, questioning themselves whether they should continue on with the mission as they penetrated further to the enemy’s territories to locate Private Ryan. They were also having a lot of doubts on the mission as they were unsure whether Private Ryan was still alive or dead. Along the mission, they even found the wrong Ryan and also had two men killed, Private Caparzo and the medic, Wade due to some personal ethic decisions at war.
