Friendship and the Importance of Relationships

    We have covered a lot of material and have read the ideas and opinions of many people in our class. The Chosen has been the most influential book to me so far. I can relate many of the themes that Chaim Potok presents in his book to my life and my own experiences. One of the biggest themes that struck me while reading his novel was friendship and the importance of relationships in our lives. Danny and Reuven found out the importance of relationships that they had in their lives and I can relate parts of my life to their experiences.
    First is the relationship between Danny and Reuven. Their friendship started with hate and grew into love. I have had an incredibly similar experience in my life as well. The situation that I was in is extremely comparable to Danny and Reuven’s. My friendship with my friend Whitney started over the years as I played basketball against her. I played for the Bristol Bay Angels, and she played for the Ninilchik Wolverines, our school’s biggest rival. In the beginning, she and I only knew each other’s basketball skills and tendencies on the court. When we met, we each had fire in our eyes and great intensity to beach each other the best we could. We, in a sense, hated each other. The hate grew over the years and finally came to a peak when we met at the basketball state tournament my senior year of high school. Our teams were playing for the championship title and we were each going to do whatever it took to win. However, Whitney took it a little too far and ended up hurting me in the process. Like Reuven, I had hate for Whitney and what she had done to me during the game. However, she, like Danny, came to me to apologize and we began to form a friends ...
