RFID: Poised to be The Next Advance In Inv. Mgmt. Technology
Until recently, radio frequency identification (RFID) was considered too costly and difficult to implement for traditional inventory management functionality. However, this evolving technology is becoming both reliable and affordable, providing significant cost and speed advantages, meaning inventory management professionals can no longer ignore it and avoid considering its application.
The early accolades for RFID. Since RFID promises higher quality information and real-time tracking, this is the next step in the evolution of automatic data collection technology. And the experts agree. For example, Michael J. Sarro, II, CPIM, director, client services, RealTime Technologies, Inc. (Exton, Pa.;

) explains, “RFID is an excellent business tool that helps companies manage their supply chains better, increase their margins and profits, and decrease costs.”
Companies that have adopted RFID, he shared at Congress for Progress 28 (APICS Region 9 Chapters; www.cp-apics.org), experienced better inventory management, increased throughput and productivity, have shorter order cycles and faster shipping, and reduced labor costs for tracking and inventory management.
