Personal Strengths and Weaknesses in Communication

   Good communication is one of the most valued skills in the world. Effective listening is basic to communicating productively inside an organization and meeting the competitive challenges outside.
   The purpose of communication is to get one’s message across to others. Communication is a process of activity, exchange, or set of behaviors that occurs over time, which involves both the sender of the message and the receiver.
   This process leaves room for error, with messages often misinterpreted by one or more of the parties involved. Misinterpretation causes unnecessary confusion and counter productivity. In fact, a message is successful only when both the sender and the receiver have a shared understanding of the message.
   By successfully conveying a message, one expresses their thoughts and ideas effectively. When not conveying a message successfully, the thoughts and ideas that one expresses are not received, causing a communication breakdown and creating roadblocks that stand in the way of one’s goals – both personally and professionally (McGraw-Hill Companies (2003) p11).
