This project is aimed at increasing awareness among the business community to the increasing magnitude of the water crisis paying particular attention to sustainable water management and the effect it has on social, economic and environmental development.
As there is approximately 3% of fresh water available in the world today, 2.5% being frozen, leaves us with approximately .5% fresh water available to humanity.
Irrigation for crops worldwide accounts for 70% of water usage, humanity and business cannot survive in a society that thirsts. While Man is polluting water faster than nature can recycle it, and over 2.4 billion people are in need of it. Sustainable measures such as the following mentioned are needed to be put in place.
To date, contributions of businesses to the goal recycling, efficient water and electricity conservation towards the goal of sustainability include.
? A Finland paper mill reduced water usage by 90% by changing from thermomechanical pulp to biological wastewater treatment facility that permitted water recycling.
? Textile firm in India reduced water consumption by replacing zinc with aluminium in its synthetic fibre production. This reduced amount of trace metals in wastewater enabling reuse by local farmers for irrigation.
? Sugar cane plant in Mexico, reduced water consumption by over 90% by improving house keeping and segregating sewerage from process water.
? Drip irrigation used by farmers, supplying water directly to the plants roots rather than watering a whole field, whilst recapturing any excess water for reuse.
? Improved Desalinisation plants delivering fresh water at around a fifth of the cost previously incurred, due t ...
