Team Contrasting

In my career as an IT professional, I was a member of two teams with the main goals focused on HR/Payroll procedure and both were built on the same structures.  I will show how each team differed from one another and note which team was most effective in achieving the goals of the user community through
•    internal team processes,
•    team design, and
•    team member selection.

Team #1 reflected the characteristics of a self-managed team. Team #1 was comprised of member with different level of expertise such as: functional liaison, help desk support, project management, developer/programmer, database administrator, and network support.  The support of senior management allowed the team to operate well.  With the development of team #1, the team was characterized as interdependent and independent.  The factor depended heavily on what was being asked of the team.  The team was delegated more and more responsibilities and all team members begin to rely on each other in meaningful ways.  One can say the relationship between the team and management was supportive of one another.  The results worked both ways:
•    the team delivered what management needed in the way of results
•    management delivered what the team needed
o    the resources,
o    recognition, and
o    overall support.

Team #2 reflects the characteristics of a project team in which the manager hand pick the members which no specific expertise in mind.  Team #2 ended up being built with head-strong personalities who had their own ideas how the project should move forward and were very adamant towards thei ...
