Strengths    ?    Pakistan boasts an enormous potential audience, even if most of the population currently resides beyond the reach of modern retail outlets
 
?    The food-processing industry is large and     expanding. It is currently characterised by numerous small firms, allowing for growth via consolidation.

?    The country is a leading producer of a number of profitable agricultural commodities, most notably milk and sugar.

?    Changing consumer preferences among middle- and upper-income urban consumers are increasing demand for imported and value-added foods.

?    The entrance of global wholesalers, Metro and Makro, should generate some interest among other multinational operators, while also boosting sales via the increased availability of imported goods in independent stores.

?    Several international food-processing companies have entered the market either through joint ventures or by establishing their own subsidiaries which has led to improvement in infrastructure and industry best practices.
Weaknesses    ?    There is a lack of foreign investors in Pakistan's mass grocery retail (MGR) sector, with traditional markets and independents accounting for 95% of retail food sales

?    The dominance of the low-priced government-backed Utility Stores Corporation chain may impede the efforts of newcomers to build market share
