Picture yourself at a university or college, giving a speech to the student body about Student Codes of Conduct and their rights and responsibilities in their academic environment. As you walk up to the podium, you glance out over the massive student body that fills the auditorium. While you are waiting for the study body to calm down from their applauding a thought crosses your mind. How many of these students in the past twenty four hours have broken one or more of the Student Codes of Conduct? Chances are that there are more than a handful of the students who have violated the Student Codes of Conduct. “In 2005, McCabe reported levels of cheating between 47 and 71%. McCabe’s data, based on over 18,000 students in 61 schools in the U.S. and Canada” (Kisamore, Stone, & Jawahar 2007). One might say that these are astonishing numbers, which leaves you asking where is all the academic honesty, truthfulness and ethics in college education? With academic misconduct on the rise one could wonder how much academic integrity is still left in our universities and colleges. We will delve into whether or not honesty, truthfulness, and ethics are still expected at college; what the Student Codes of Conduct are and what benefits the Student Codes of Conduct bring to the students of today.
