Gilgamesh

Many and many years ago, a story was written on tablets of clay, the Epic of Gilgamesh. This story took place roughly around 2700 B.C. in Uruk, a city in ancient Mesopotamia.  Gilgamesh, ruler of Uruk, is an arrogant ruler and insists on being the first person to sleep with every virgin before she gets married. Enkidu is created by the Gods to stop Gilgamesh and his evil ways. Enkidu was “humanized” by a prostitute in order to take on Gilgamesh. At first, they fought and then became friends and set out on their adventure together. Gilgamesh and Enkidu go to the Cedar Forest where they defeat Humbaba, the lord of the forest. After the battle, when Gilgamesh is washing himself, Ishtar, queen of heaven, attempts to seduce him. When Gilgamesh refused her advances, Ishtar becomes furious and tries to kill Gilgamesh with the bull of Heaven. Gilgamesh and Enkidu eliminate the bull, but the gods punish Enkidu by taking his life. Troubled with grief over the death of Enkidu, Gilgamesh goes to Utnapishtim to learn the secret of eternal life. Unsuccessful in his pursuit for eternal life, Gilgamesh is offered a something different, a plant at the bottom of a body of water. Eating the plant will grant one immediate transformation. Gilgamesh finds the magical plant, but it is stolen by a serpent. Faced with his own ultimate mortality, Gilgamesh returns to Uruk a changed man. After his death, the people of Uruk praise his greatness.
      The Epic of Gilgamesh addresses equally a story of two friends, Gilgamesh and Enkidu, their devotion to one another even after death and how a person can change in due time.
