9 Tips for Training
Training your puppy can be stressful. Here are nine tips to make training your dog a quick and easy process.
1. Only one person should conduct the training. Even if everyone used the same commands their timing can be off, which can make the puppy confused. Someone who is patient should conduct the training, although, other family members can work with the puppy after it understands the commands. Make sure that everyone uses the same commands. If the puppy seems confused with more than one person working with it, go back to having one member giving the commands.
2. Use positive reinforcement. Reward the puppy as soon as it learns a command. Treats can be used occasionally but not always. If always given a treat, the puppy will only obey if you have a treat in hand. Never use the word “no” during training. “No” should only be used if the puppy is showing in appropriate behavior. Otherwise, the puppy will think it is in trouble when it really hasn’t learned the command.
3. Only use one command at a time. Move to additional commands after the puppy learns the first one.
4. Keep your voice cheerful. Some puppies respond best to a playful, coaxing voice. Others respond best to a slightly stern, but still pleasant, tone. Experiment to see which voice will work better with your puppy.
5. Keep your sense of humor. Puppies are distracted easily which can try your patience. Focus on the accomplishments your puppy has made no matter how small they are. As your puppy grows, enjoy your time with it. After all, your puppy won’t be a puppy for long.
