Introduction
Applied Energy Services, Inc. (AES) was established in 1981 by Roger Sand and Dennis Bakke as a consulting and project development company. The company started operating with a mission statement to value, respect and treat fairly all stakeholders and to act in socially and environmentally responsible ways. The company chose to be committed to its mission statement and stay environmentally friendly and sacrifice part of its profits. The company was able to use opportunities and took risks in a rapidly changing industry and grew in a global power company. AES adopted a very unique strategy that can be described by willingness to enter risky markets, highly decentralized structure and strong commitment to company’s four core values. As of early 2001, AES operated 139 businesses in 32 countries. The company had an impressive growth rates over the past 5 years and targeted to become the first nontechnology company to earn $1 billion in profits in a single year in 2001.

Mission:
To meet the world’s needs for safe, clean, reliable supplies of electricity. Making profit and rewarding shareholders is essential but it takes the backseat to pursuit of living up to a code of social values and demonstrating socially responsible behavior.
Vision:
To provide reliable, low cost electricity to people in a socially responsible way.
